Navigation Weekend

On Day 1 of this weekend course, you will learn the essentials of navigation, including:

  • how to read a map
  • how not to get lost
  • how to tell direction by a compass and the sun
  • natural navigation skills such as reading clues from plants, trees and other natural elements

This day focuses on theory, to ground you in the information you need to know.

That evening, we will jump into the wild world of night navigation! We’ve found the very best way to learn navigation is to practice it at night when you can’t see well, you’re anxious and uncertain — just like you’ll be when the mist comes down or if you get lost.

Master night navigation and you’ll never be afraid of getting lost again.

On Day 2, we’ll have a mini-expedition which takes us into the hills on a 4 hour walk. Putting you in a realistic situation, you’ll further master your skills, test out what you guessed earlier and learn as you do.

Day 1 is theoretical, planning with your map and tools. Day 2 is the practical, testing and perfecting.

What is the difference between the one day course and the weekend course?

The weekend course goes into greater detail, introducing you to more skills but its primary focus is to give you more hands-on time to practice.

The second day’s session is devoted entirely to ensuring you’ve mastered the skills we’ve been learning on Day 1, to build your confidence and really ground the skills you’ve been learning.

He is passionate about the wonders of nature, often going barefoot to improve awareness and ground himself. He also enjoys not eating sugar, meditation and sometimes instigates power-off weekends (no electricity) for fun!

He specialises in teaching navigation, fire making and outdoor-living skills. He is happiest with his family, sat by a fire drinking green tea, or sat on a mountain top, waiting and watching.
